International Oracle Users Group – Americas

Linux Special Interest Group

Background
During the 1999 IOUG-A Live Conference in Denver, Colorado, the attendees requested that a Round Table be scheduled to discuss issues associated with Oracle’s recent porting of the database kernel and related applications to the Linux operating system. It became apparent at this meeting that the attendees needed a regular avenue for communicating ideas and experiences to each other, the IOUG-A, and Oracle Corporation regarding Oracle and Oracle-related products on the Linux operating system. This document is a direct result of that discussion. It also serves as a request to the IOUG-A to be recognized as an official Special Interest Group (SIG) of the IOUG-A.

Charter/Mission Statement
The mission of the IOUG-A Linux SIG is to provide the IOUG-A members with a forum for the open discussion of ideas, experiences, and issues associated with Oracle and Oracle-related products on the Linux operating system. The IOUG-A Linux SIG will also act as a conduit for enhancement recommendations regarding Oracle’s product suite on the Linux operating system.

Affiliation with the IOUG-A
The Linux SIG recognizes the key role played by the IOUG-A in fulfilling the SIG’s mission. As a result, the Linux SIG requests recognition as a Special Interest Group of the IOUG-A.

Membership services
As a benefit to members, the Linux SIG will provide the following services:
Governance of the SIG
The Linux SIG will hold a business meeting at the annual IOUG-A conference. The purpose of this meeting will be to elect officers to the Steering Committee, solicit the membership for assistance in shaping the direction of the SIG, and to adjust the rules by which the SIG is governed.
Membership
Membership in the IOUG-A Linux SIG will be open to any IOUG-A member in good standing with an interest in Oracle and Oracle-related products running on the Linux operating system. No fees beyond the normal IOUG-A membership are necessary at this time.
Officer positions and responsibilities
Currently, there are no formally identified positions beyond the Acting Communications Chair. This position has been created to act as a point of contact for the IOUG-A officers and staff and to facilitate the formation of the SIG. Once the SIG has been officially recognized, its first official act will be to convene the Steering Committee and elect officers. Once that has happened, the following positions, at a minimum, will be filled:

President – The president is responsible for coordinating the business of the SIG, including oversight of the annual business meeting, the Steering Committee meetings, and attending any IOUG-A Alliance Council meetings.

Vice president – The vice president is responsible for assisting the president as determined by the president.

Secretary – The secretary is responsible for preparing and maintaining the meeting minutes and any correspondence with the membership, the IOUG-A officers, and Oracle Corporation.

Treasurer – The treasurer is responsible for the financial responsibilities of the SIG.

Current officers
As stated above, the only position currently occupied is that of the Acting Communications Chair. This position is held by:
