- Tips and Techniques for Optimizing
Database and Application Performance over WANs, David
Alpern, SmithKline Beecham, 9:30 AM
- Achieving acceptable database application performance
over wide area networks can be challenging. Inherent
network latency, coupled with SQL*Net/Net80 network
packet chatter, often result in poor performance over
WANs. This presentation describes system and coding
methods best avoided and explores a variety of techniques
to overcome and workaround network bottlenecks. SQL*Net
low level configuration is considered first. Several
performance enhancing techniques using PL/SQL are be
discussed in detail. References to relevant Oracle
support documentation as well as sample PL/SQL code
illustrating the techniques are provided.

- Advantages of Network Attached
Storage in an Oracle Environment, Tom Yarmass, Network
Appliance, 10:45 AM
- In depth technical overview of network attached storage
(NAS) in an Oracle environment. Discussion of the
flexibility, reliability, performance and administration
advantages of NAS. How to eliminate tape-based recovery
of the database.
-
- WebDB from a User's Perspective,
Kevin Loney, Kevin Loney Consulting, L.L.C., 1:00 PM
- WebDB allows developers to create and
maintain applications via a set of PL/SQL packages and
tools specific to this development toolset. Database
administrators of WebDB applications need to take the
WebDB architecture into account when implementing
processes for database administration. In this
presentation, participants will see the DBA activities
needed to secure, tune, and effectively implement WebDB
application databases. Backup/recovery and sizing issues
will also be discussed.

stories. This is your opportunity to ask the
questions you don't dare ask at the office, and come away
with answers, directions, and approaches you can take to
the database administration issues that you need to
handle. Novices and experts are all welcome.
